The BMI is an indicator of leanness or corpulence based on one's height and weight. It was designed by Adolphe Quetelet around 1850, and has been traditionnally used to classify a person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
The World Health Organization indicates the following BMI classification values for adults (men and women) over age 18:

Moderate Thinness | 16 - 17 | Nutritional deficiency and osteoporosis |
Mild Thinness | 17 - 18.5 | Nutritional deficiency |
Normal | 18.5 - 25 | Low risk (healthy range) |
Overweight | 25 - 30 | Increased for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, etc. |
Obese Class I | 30 - 35 | High risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, etc. |
Obese Class II | 35 - 40 | Severe health risks |
Obese Class III | above 40 | Life threatening risks |
